Confucianism – Shedding wealth makes Virtue
(She Cai Zhuo Fu)
Food and clothing are for the world to live, so shedding wealth for the poor is the most important. It can break our miserable heart and give relief to the poor in their distress. It might be hard to let go of money at first, but later it will become a habit, and this can help clean our selfishness as well.

If you see money as the spur of the moment, there would be very much sad things in this world! Xu SiEr is poor but he returned the money, which is particularly how gained virtues should be. To give up self-interest, paid in good faith. That’s what we need to learn to begin from ourself!

One day, a woman went to the marketplace to sell her child.
” Why are you selling your child?” people asked.
” Because its the only way to get my husband back.” she said, while crying.
” Alright. I’ll buy him.” a villager said.
The villager gave her the money, took the child, and left.
” Give me a few pears.” the woman said to a merchant.
She took her basket, and walked pass a homeless with a broken leg.
” Please, money?” the homeless begged.
The woman accidentally dropped her money, and kept going.
The homeless opened the bag, looked inside, while all the villagers kept congratulating him.
” No, no, I’m going to give it back to her. She’s going to come back.” he said. And she did.
” Have you seen my money pouch? Have you seen my pouch?” she asked.
Then, the homeless grabbed her skirt and said, ” Miss! but Miss!”
” No! I have no money to give! I’m in a hurry!”
” Here is your money bag.”
She rubbed her eyes, said thank you, and grabbed the pouch. She went to court to get her husband out of jail.
” What? Who would do that to their child? Nevermind. You can have your husband back. I won’t take your money.”
” Thank you, officer!”
She left with her husband. That night..
” My son! My son!” the man sobbed.
” All thanks to that homeless you’re back here.”
” What’s his name? We need to thank him.”
” I don’t know! I was in such a hurry that I didn’t bother to ask.”
” Well you should’ve.”
In the buddist temple, slept the homeless. Then, two spirits appeared and started pulling him in opposite directions.
” AHHH!!” an old man screamed. ” GET UP YOU LAZY BOY! I HAVEN’T BEEN ABLE TO HAVE A GOOD SLEEP!”
” Huh?!” the homeless said, suddenly jumping to his feet.
” Huh? How come you got up?”
” I got up! I got up! My legs are fixed! ” he ran to the old man and hugged him.
” My legs are fine now, so ther’s no need to beg for money. Then what am I going to do for a living?”
~ONE YEAR LATER~
” Selling water! Seliing water!”
” I want two buckets of water please.” a lady said.
The man walked pass the couple he helped a year ago.
” Hmm? That man looks so familiar!” the lady said.
” really?”
” I think he didn’t sell water before!”
” Hey! Water guy! What’s your name? Did you always sell water?” the man asked.
” Huh? Oh, my name is Xu Ser. I was a homeless who begged for money before. then, i started selling water.”
” A beggar?” the man asked, and looked at his wife, who nodded.
” Husband, I think he’s the one who helped me a year before! But he’s healthy! The homeless’s leg was broken.” his wife whispered.
” Um, excuse me, but did your leg used to be broken?”
” Yes, but, how did you know?”
” Do you still remember me? You’re my rescuer!”
” Huh? Oh! You must be that lady who lost her money!”
The couple kneeled down and said,
” Thank you! please accept our kowtow!”
” Please, get up!”
” We’ve been looking for you all over, to repay your kindness!”
” No, no, don’t, it wasn’t anything. I was supposed to help you.”
” You’re such a good person!”
” No, no.”
” But, weren’t you disabled?”
” Haha. This is quite a long story. You see, these two spirits pulled me when I was sleeping, and the next morning, I was fine!”
” Really? Good people get repayed with kindness!”
” yeah, I guess.”
” Please. Stay with us. We need people to help with the shop. And we are trying to repay you.”
” Well, I don’t know anything about medicine.”
” We can teach you!” a fat lady said.
” it’s not hard. Do it once or twice, you’ll get it!”
” Okay, then.”
So he ended up staying.
Another day, the husband said,
” Friend ,I have to go to a different country to help with more things, so the shop is yours to take care of.”
” Don’t worry. I will. And thank you.”
So fall turned into winter, and winter turned into spring. One day, as he went outside, he received a letter. it said,
” We decided to stay at our hometown. Before we left, we’ve already decided that we would give the shop to you. Good luck.”
